Designing Fedora Badges @ Flock 2017

Exciting news: I will be attending Flock 2017 in Hyannis, MA, this year! I will be holding a Fedora Badges Do Session with Masha Leonova. The session will be held on the first day of the conference, Tuesday, August 29th, at 1:30PM in 4-Centerville A + B.

We will be starting from the top: a short overview, then making sure everyone has Inkscape installed and ready to go, downloading Badges design resources, setting them up, and testing everything to get ready to design. The process for designing Fedora Badges has changed slightly as we welcomed a transition to Pagure earlier this year. Now we have easy uploading for files, and tags – all in a shiny new format!

Next we will go step by step through the process of designing a Fedora Badge. We will highlight and detail important points such as research, creating your designs to follow Badge aesthetics, and exporting your final PNG at the correct size. Then we will get to work actually designing. Masha, myself and any other experienced badge artists attending will help you through every step of the process, all the way from picking an issue to uploading the final artwork. Come have fun learning, using your creative side and of course – earn the Badger Padawn badge!

A side note for interested developers: There are a lot of artwork approved badges ready to be pushed to the website. Although we will not be specifically instructing on creating yaml files for awarding badges, I would love to host any developers during this session who want to help out or jump in so we can get these pushed. For all the weathered Fedora Badge developers, it would be great for you to revisit some of the issues so we can update the status. Are they now possible/will never be possible? Let us know, so we can make some art or close some issues!

My excitement to see my Fedora friends, to learn, and to put in focused work on Fedora Badges is growing as we get closer to the date. Looking forward to seeing you all soon πŸ™‚

Flock 2015: Fedora Badges Workshop

Wow! I can’t believe it has been a year since Flock 2014. It has been exciting to learn new things and see so many familiar faces.

This year I will be holding a workshop on designing Fedora Badges. My workshop will be held in Room 4 at 3PM today. I invite anyone who is interested in Fedora Badges to attend my workshop, or look out for a link to a video in the near future. I will be going over the basics of how to design a Fedora Badge. For example I will outline where to find resources, how to pick out tickets and proper badge work flow for Inkscape. If you are curious about designing badges or badges in general, this is a great time to learn how to get involved and and this workshop is appropriate for all design skill levels. I believe the current badges developer, Ralph Bean, will be in attendance as well. If you would like to download the slides for my presentation you can find them here on the Flock Sched.

If you want to learn more about Inkscape, GIMP and the Fedora Design Team, try to make it to one of the design sessions. We are a very friendly group!

I am looking forward to having a fun and productive Fedora Badges Workshop. Get well on your way to earning an apprentice badge artist badge πŸ˜€

OPW: Fedora Badges Internship Summary

Looking back I almost can’t believe how much has gotten done and how fast the the last three months went. It has been a pleasure to be an Outreach Program for Women and Fedora Badges Intern. Here is a comprehensive list of everything I accomplished with the help of my mentors Mizmo, Threebean, RyanLerch and all of the other awesome mentors in the Fedora Community.Β  Enjoy!

I designed over 70 badges for the Fedora Badges website, many of which were original concepts. I helped review and edit other contributors badge designs. I researched, developed and designed the Fedora Badges Style Guide from scratch. I also created a page on the Fedora Badges wiki for Design Resources. Available on the Design Resources page is the Fedora Badges Style Guide, Fedora Badges Templates, Fedora Color Palette(Selection), Fedora Badges Extended Color Palette, Content(backgrounds, pandas, badgers & graphics) and a Fedora Badges Poster all designed or compiled by myself.

Fedora Badges
Poster by riecatnor
March, 2014

I am excited and proud to present the Fedora Badges Design Resources page on the Fedora Badges trac wiki. Here you can find the Fedora Badges style guide, templates, content, palettes and theΒ  Fedora Badges poster shown above.

I have put a lot of effort into making this page a conclusive and thorough resource for ALL people to create badge artwork, not just graphic designers. I know there are those of you out there who may believe they are not “artistic” enough to design badges, but I am here to tell you different. In theory, there is enough content available that you can cut and paste different parts to make your own badge designs and you will not have to draw anything (but you can!). I have provided everything from templates down to detailed instructions on things like the numerical value of the stroke you should use or how to categorize your badge. The Design Resources page even has a file full of backgrounds. If you would like to get involved in designing badges be sure to visit #fedora-design (irc.freenode.net) and ask those lovely folks for help!

Today is my last official day as an Outreach Program for Women & Fedora Badges Intern, and a bittersweet day it is. If you remember my first blog post, you will be happy to know that I have completed everything that I set out to do.Β  I could not be more thrilled with the outcome of my internship, but I have to admit I am sad that it is over! I had a really fun time illustrating full time and I met awesome people who were constantly a positive force in my work. I have also gained new valuable skills/experience such as: a better understanding of how to get involved in FOSS projects, designing a style guide from scratch, navigating an online wiki/trac system, and successfully working remotely. Even though I have used Inkscape for years before this internship, I have also gained a considerable amount of ease navigating the program and its shortcuts.

Lastly, but for me possibly most importantly, the chance to almost exclusively illustrate for the past three months has seriously leveled up my artistic skills all around. Working with vectors so intensely has helped further develop a certain perspective of how I see the world and mark it down, whether it be in Inkscape or with a pencil and paper. I have seen improvement in all my personal artistic endeavors (and therefore myself) and that is a very rewarding feeling.

Fedora Badges Official Style Guide

Exciting news: I have finished the Fedora Badges Official Style Guide! I am still in the process of making a page on the Fedora Badges trac to post the style guide, templates and badge content for all to download. Hopefully this guide will prove to be a useful tool for designers and non designers alike to create new Fedora Badges πŸ™‚ Enjoy!

Week 7

badgestyleguidebrainstorm

This week I have been working on the style guide for Fedora Badges pretty much nonstop. Originally, the information was not going to be sub categorized quite as much but after I realized how many categories existed I decided to break the information down fully.

I wanted to share this little brain storm I wrote for how the guide will tentatively be organized. In this set up each number (1, 2, 3…) will be a chapter, and each letter (a, b, c…) will be a page in that chapter.

Oh and here is a sneak preview of a badge coming soon to Fedora Badges πŸ™‚
